Court Suspends Teachers’ Strike Temporarily

On Tuesday, the Employment and Labour Relations Court put a temporary stop to the national teachers’ strike. This decision came after a request from the Teachers Service Commission (TSC). The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for September 5.

This ruling provides some relief for students who were struggling with their studies, especially with national exams coming up later in the term. The strike, led by the Kenya National Union of Post-Primary Teachers (KUPPET), had disrupted learning across the country.

On the same day, the Treasury released Ksh 13.5 billion to cover teachers’ salaries for July and August. This move is intended to address some of the concerns that led to the strike. Teachers had been demanding that the government fulfill their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and other issues.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba expressed hope that a resolution would be found through continued discussions with all involved parties. He also wished students well as they returned to school for the third term, hoping it would be a time of growth and learning.

As of now, the teachers’ unions have not yet responded to this latest development.
