KNUT Opposes Nomination of Julius Migos Ogamba as CS for Education

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has voiced strong opposition to the nomination of Julius Migos Ogamba as the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education, emphasizing the necessity of appointing an educationist to the role.

Migos, a lawyer by profession, has been deemed unsuitable for the position by KNUT officials, including second national vice-chairman Agrrey Namisi. They argue that his lack of background in education may impede his ability to effectively address the current challenges facing the sector.

“We have no problem with the nominee as a person, but we feel the education sector needed someone with a clear background in the sector who would not need orientation,” stated Namisi.

Namisi made these remarks in Eldoret on Saturday during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the KNUT Chepkoilel branch. He was accompanied by branch officials, including executive secretary Sammy Bor.

According to Namisi, the education sector urgently requires a CS who can seamlessly integrate into the role and spearhead necessary transformations. He highlighted the critical stage of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) implementation, underscoring the need for a CS with in-depth knowledge and experience in the education sector.

Namisi further pointed out that the Kenya Kwanza administration is already halfway through its term. With only two years remaining, he cautioned that appointing a CS who is not an educationist would result in delays as the new appointee takes time to acclimate to the demands of the role.

The KNUT’s stance reflects a broader concern within the education community about ensuring effective leadership to navigate the complexities of the sector and drive forward essential reforms.
