The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) revealed that it has completed the review of new set books that will be studied from 2022 to 2026 by seniors in High School.
In a statement shared on Thursday, January 13, 2022, KICD revealed the set books that will be tackled in high school for literature in English and Kiswahili.
For the compulsory literature set books, students will now study Fathers of Nations, which is a novel, replacing Blossoms of the Savannah.
KICD stated that for the compulsory play, learners will be reading The Samaritan by John Lara, which is replacing A Doll’s House by Henry Ibsen.
For the optional set books, learners will choose to study Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro. It will be replacing The Pearly by Jon Steinbeck.
The other optional book will be in the anthology of Short stories category, where students can pick to study A silent Song and Other Stories edited by Godwin Sundu. This is a replacement for Memories We Lost by Chris Wanjala.
For an optional play, students will study A Parliament of Owls by Adipo Sidang replacing Inheritance by David Mulwa.
KICD announced that learners will now study Bembea written by Dr Timothy Moriasi, replacing Kigogo by Pauline Kea Kyovi for their Kiswahili novel also known as Tamthilia.
For Short stories, KICD approved Mapambazuko ya Machweo na Hadithi Nyingine, replacing Tumbo Lisiloshiba na Hadithi Zingine.
The curriculum developer recommended Nguu za Jadi by Prof Clara Momanyi to replace Chozi La Heri written by Assumpta K. Matei.
This means that parents will have to buy the new set of books as schools reopen for the First Term in May 2022.
