Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken action against a school headteacher for violating a direct order against fee increament from Education CS Prof.George Magoha.
Nakuru High School Principal, Mike Yator was on Wednesday, September 1 interdicted for breaching school fees guidelines issued by CS Magoha.
The school head is accused of contravening the Basic Education Act Section 29 in the period between 2020 and 2021 by charging the students extra levies.
According to the interdiction letter, Yator has been instructed to officially write a defense to the commission in the next 21 days and indicate where he will be reporting every month till the matter is settled.
TSC, moreover, ordered the school head to present before the commission evidence and documents to support his case and to vacate officer with immediate effect.
Magoha on July 22, confirmed that all national schools to slash fees by Ksh8,500 and extra county and county schools to reduce by Ksh5,500.
Those changes meant that National schools would have to charge a maximum of Ksh45,054, while extra county and county schools were to pay up to Ksh39,554 in school fees.
Magoha also orderd that all public primary schools should not charge anything except for meals, which should be done voluntarily, depending on parent’s financial ability.
The CS further directed that 75 percent of day secondary schools should remain free, as they are fully funded by the National government.
While issuing the directive, Magoha said the changes were informed by the latest changes in school term calendars. He tasked the teachers to always find out why some parents delay or fail to pay school fees instead of sending away students.
Furthermore, he also warned school heads against hiking school fees, and promised offenders dire consequences.
TSC in conjunction with the Ministry had opened investigations into a number of schools that were violating the orders and Nakuru High School Principal has become the first victim.
