Auctioneers raided the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) headquarters on Mfangano Street in Nairobi on Thursday, July 1.
KNUT communications director Peter Amunga confirmed that the auctioneers were on the premises and took some of the office equipment including furniture.
He added that KNUT secretaries in different parts of the country had not been paid for two years and some were seeking help from the courts.
“Some have gotten court orders to auction KNUT so as to get their money,” Amunga stated.
On his part, KNUT deputy secretary-general Hesbon Otieno stated that the union owed a total of Ksh1.4 million to various entities.
He added that he was not aware of any outstanding debt before assuming office.
“I pleaded to talk to them but they declined. You can clearly see that some leaders were engaged in some underhand dealings and with time we shall get to know what else is wrong so we fix it,” Otieno stated.
The incident took place just days after Wilson Sossion, the former KNUT secretary general quit and a new team took over.
