Tana River Chief Dies While Sitting KCSE Exams

Chief of Sala Location, Abdi Bute Sure, died in the exam room while sitting his KCSE Exam.

The chief was taking the exam at Hola Boys Secondary School in Tana River County when he collapsed and died. He had been registered as a private candidate.

The incidence was confirmed by the County Commissioner Mathias Mbogai Roba, although the cause of death was yet to be established by the time of publishing this story. 

Addressing the matter, the county commissioner stated that they were waiting for an official doctor’s report. “Until we get official word from the doctor, we don’t want to speculate on the matter,” said Rioba.

He was buried immediately in line with the Islamic burial rites.

Since the onset of KCSE exams, there has been a series of mysterious deaths of candidates reported. Four days before the beginning of the national exam, a student was found dangling from a tree, in what has been termed as suicide.

Nicholas Barasa, a student at Michael Wamalwa Secondary School passed on just hours before sitting the English Paper I test on Friday, March 26. 

KCSE exams this year have been met with hurdles in what has been a first for students, sitting for an exam in the middle of a pandemic. With the outcome of the exams being anticipated, examination irregularities were on the rise this year.

The Cabinet Secretary Education, Professor George Magoha has been hands on, trying to make sure the examination process runs smoothly.
