School Head Boy Unearth Cheating Ring During KCSE Exam

The head boy of a school in Busia County unearthed a cheating ring in his school that led to the arrest of two KCSE candidates and a university student.

According to police, the senior student while making his rounds   found the students aged 17 and 20, using their smartphones.

He thereafter alerted the school management over the students’ covert operations which led to the recovery of the devices.

The detectives based in the county stated that the phones contained questions and answers  to some of the papers.

Confirming the arrests which occurred on Wednesday, March 31, Busia Sub-County DCI Bernard Wamalwa stated that they launched investigations into the matter where they nabbed a university student.

They believed that the varsity student was furnishing the candidates with the examination material when they confiscated his phone.

Police believe that he had received the leaked papers from a headteacher in a private school in the county.

Under Kenyan laws, engaging in examination malpractice can lead one to be jailed.

According to the KNEC act of 2012, unauthorised possession of examination papers, material or information leads to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years, or a fine not exceeding Ksh2 million or both.

Copying during an exam will lead a candidate to be disqualified from taking the entire examination and will be prohibited from taking it again for a period not exceeding three years.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha had issued a warning to those looking to engage in election malpractise.

During an earlier address, he singled out a school in western Kenya where he stated that the principal was trying to use ‘experts’ to sit examinations for the candidates.

Without mentioning the name of the school, Magoha said they have some information that the school head has removed teachers from their servant quarters and brought in some experts who get papers which are smuggled from examination rooms, fill the answers and the papers taken back.
