2 Secondary School Students Shot Dead at Kapedo

Two High School students were among four people killed in a morning attack on Thursday, November 19 in Kapedo, Turkana County.

Unknown assailants are said to have ambushed the four and shot them dead as they had gone in search of firewood in early morning hours.

Kapedo Assistant Chief Mercy Asmit confirmed the incident while speaking to K24TV, adding that the area has experienced an increase in tension.

Asmit added that a team of police officers was dispatched to comb the area to trace the attackers and collect the bodies of the four people.

The Pokot and Turkana communities have been fighting over the control of Kapedo Trading Centre for a number of years resulting in several deaths.

The bone of contention in the disputes has been the Kapedo area, a trading centre on the border of Baringo and Turkana counties.

A peace meeting between the two rival communities was led by Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya and was attended by Governors Jackson Mandago, Stanley Kiptis (Baringo), Josphat Nanok (Turkana) and John Lonyangapuo (West Pokot).

Also in attendance during the Saturday peace meeting were Tiaty MP William Kamket and Turkana East MP Mohamed Ali Lokiru as they preached peaceful co-existence among the warring neighbouring communities.

The over 50 leaders present urged the communities from the areas often affected by banditry to give peace a chance and co-exist harmoniously in order to foster development in the region.

A day after the peace meeting, armed gunmen staged an attack in the region and made away with more than 200 goats.

The bandits descended on herders from the Turkana Community were grazing their livestock some few meters from Silale hills before firing and driving away the livestock.
