TWO JKUAT STUDENT HACKERS CHARGED WITH STEALING Ksh 24M

Two second-year students from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have been charged at Milimani Law Courts with stealing Sh25 million NCBA (K) Bank through hacking.

The two also faced another count of conspiracy to defraud the bank of Sh190 million.

The students reportedly stole Ksh 24.4 million and attempted to move another Ksh 190.7 million before the local bank caught wind of their action.

Ann Wambui and Anthony Mwangi, and three others not in court, were accused of committing the offense on or before October 20, 2020.

Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told the court that the bank trailed the suspects after one of them notified the institution of a system failure via Twitter.

“It is the first accused who initiated his prosecution process by informing bank authorities that there was a hitch in its system.

“I request the court to release the suspects on Ksh 100,000 cash bail as they are students who are not financially able to raise a substantial amount,” the suspects’ lawyer defended his clients while appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Carolyne Muthoni Njagi.

Magistrate Njagi released the duo on a cash bail of Ksh 500,000 each or Ksh 2 million bond.

The case has been slated for pre-trial in November
