Basic Education Principal Secretary, Dr Belio Kipsang, has announced that the government has disbursed a total of Sh14.5 billion to finance public primary and secondary schools ahead of the phased reopening of learning institutions on Monday, October 12.
Dr. Kipsang said that the released funds will hit bank accounts of institutions by Monday, the day Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 learners will report back to school for face to face learning.
The move by the government to release funds to schools will definitely be a relief, bearing in mind the schools have been crippled financially since the pandemic took a heavy toll on education sector.
This comes barely a week after education CS professor Magoha announced phased reopening that prioritized candidates classes and grade four pupils.
According to CS Magoha, term two will commence on Monday 12th October, 2020 and it will end on 23 December, 2020 to pave way for a week-long holiday.
Third term will be come to an end on 19th March, 2021.
Kenya certificate of primary education, KCPE, will start on 22nd March, 2021 and end on 24th March, 2021.
On the other hand, Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, will kick off on 25th March, 2021. This close to manth-long exercise, will come to close on 16th April, 2021, to give way for marking exercise.
Full Reopening
While releasing revised term dates for Grade 4, Class 8 and Form 4 learners, CS Magoha stated that ministry of education will work jointly with that of health so as to determine when full reopening will be most appropriate.
He said: “The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, will continuously monitor adherence to ‘Guidelines on Health and Safety Protocols for Reopening of Basic Education Institutions amid COVID-19 Pandemic’ in order to determine when to re-open for all other learners in primary and secondary schools.”
