TEACHERS TO UNDERGO COVID 19 TRAINING BEFORE SCHOOLS REOPEN

The Ministry of Education has stated that, all teachers will undergo a crash training programme on handling Covid-19 from next week. The training will commence after teachers have reported at their respective schools on September 28. Teachers have been away from their working stations for six months due to Corona Virus outbreak. 

All Ministry of Education (MOE) officials together with the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) top officials will be briefed on the training. The Covid 19 handling programme will cover all teachers from the 47 counties.

The teachers will be trained for two weeks before they train the learners in the first week of reopening.

A National Steering Committee has been constituted where the CS for Education Prof. George Magoha will be the chair.

Other members include: Zack Kinuthia-Chief Administrative Secretary, Belio Kipsang-Early Learning and Basic Education Principal Secretary, Susan Mochache-Health Principal Secretary.

Part of the committee are; Education Ministry directors, Teachers Service Commission Chief Executive Nancy Macharia and heads of other semi-autonomous government agencies.

The team will play an oversight role in the training as well as identify priority areas and potential risks.

The team will also monitor teacher’s attendance, timelines of the training as well as quality training and advise on changes that may occur during the training.

The Covid 19 handling programme of activities have been scheduled us follows ;master trainers at the national level, trainer of trainers at regional/county levels, sub-county education officials, curriculum support officers, deputy county commissioners and headteachers.

Four other staff (deputy, senior teacher, health club teacher and one member of non-teaching staff).

The board of management and the parents’ association representatives will be trained first.

Institutional training and preparations targeting other teachers, subordinate staff and special needs education learner support assistants, will take place before learners resume.

Heads of institution, deputies and senior teachers, will be part of the training. Five modules that carry messages targeted at specific audiences will be used.

For the training to be successful, the ministry plans to roll out a massive communication strategy.
