It’s a goal for every teacher to help students govern their own behaviour.
There are many ways teachers can use to maintain discipline in the classroom.
Teachers should ensure the following
1. Be fair, positive and consistent
Teachers should be very keen when handling indiscipline cases by pupils for it dictates whether the other pupils will repeat it or not.
2. Keep your classroom orderly
Maintain a cheerful and attractive classroom.
Let the pupils trust you and take you as a friend while maintaining the gap between you and them. You are a teacher, let them see you as a teacher no matter how friendly you will be.
3. Get to know your students
Learn their names, use them in and out of class. You will soon develop a sixth sense for anticipating trouble before it begins, but don’t act as though you expect trouble.
4. Let the students know you care and love them
Discuss jointly with the pupils what is expected in terms of behavior and always give them a listening ear.
Show interest in what students say whether it pertains the lesson or not.
5. Make learning fun
Make education interesting and relevant to students.
6. Don’t threaten pupils
Never use threats to enforce discipline in pupils. Never humiliate a child.
7. Keep rules simple
Establish few and simple classroom rules.
As discipline is Paramount in performing, the above ways will make it work.
